This research-led MRes in Geoenvironmental Engineering aims to provide advanced study in key issues related to geoenvironmental engineering and related topics such as geoenergy and engineering for sustainability.

The course is ideal if you are looking to further your knowledge and develop your research skills, contribute to new knowledge on geoenvironmental engineering topics.

The MRes offers a unique and bespoke experience; you can tailor your studies to suit your own research interests and career objectives. The course is largely research and project-based but there is also a taught element to it. You'll be taught by an interdisciplinary group of professionally qualified civil engineers, chemists, microbiologists and geoscientists. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has strong industrial links which contributes to the overall student experience, too. The research element provides opportunity to undertake independent research alongside leading academics delivering exciting research on geoenvironmental engineering topics, including geoenergy applications.

An MRes takes one year full-time or two years part-time to complete. While full-time study is available to UK and international students, part-time study on-campus is only available to students from the UK or EU. You can also study this course part-time through online Distance Learning, over 36 months, offering a flexible mode of study. Distance Learning is available to UK and international students.

    • The Faculty of Engineering are delighted to be offering scholarships to all eligible postgraduate taught, self-funded, international (non-EU) fee-paying students, joining a full-time on-campus course in the Faculty of Engineering in September 2026.
    • The value of the scholarship award is £6,000 and will be deducted from your tuition fees. 
    • The scholarship will be awarded automatically and no application is necessary. Please note that the scholarship details will be added to your student record once payment of deposit has been received, and the funds will be automatically deducted from your overall tuition fees.

    Eligibility

    Important things to note:

    • The value of the Faculty of Engineering International Scholarship for Masters Study - September 2026 award is £6,000 and will be deducted from your tuition fees. 
    • The scholarships are available for eligible self-funded, international (non-EU) fee-paying applicants enrolling on a full-time course within the University of Strathclyde’s campus in Glasgow starting September 2026 only. The scholarships cannot be deferred or transferred to any other entry points. 
    • The scholarships will be awarded automatically and no application is necessary. Please note that the scholarship details will be added to your student record once payment of deposit has been received, and the funds will be automatically deducted from your overall fees. 
    • Those who receive full sponsorship from a government office or embassy are not eligible for these scholarships.
    • In order to be considered for a scholarship an applicant must hold an offer to study on a full-time postgraduate taught course in September 2026.
    • Students are only eligible for one scholarship per academic year from the University of Strathclyde.
    • Students studying a two-year MSc course will receive a £6,000 scholarship for each year of study.  This includes the MArch Advanced Architectural Design, MArch Architectural Design (International) and the MSc Advanced Electrical Power and Energy Systems.
    • Students studying on the two -year MSc Ship and Offshore Technology course will receive a £6000 scholarship for year one only due to year two being studied at a partner institute.
    • Students on the 18-month MSc Advanced Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Placement course will receive an additional pro-rata scholarship for the remaining 6 months of the course studied in year 2.  
    • Students who do not meet any of the required criteria will automatically not be considered.
    • The Faculty of Engineering's decision on the awarding of scholarships is final.
