Program Overview

Develop your Welsh language skills ready for the workplace. This degree is designed to give you high quality Welsh language skills to enhance your professional use of Welsh.

This Professional Welsh course is perfect for first language, and second language Welsh speakers looking to further develop their skills and prepare for a career working through the medium of Welsh.

Aiming to strengthen your written and oral skills, this course has been developed in collaboration with Canolfan Bedwyr, the University's award-winning Centre for Welsh Language Services, Research and Technology. Studying Professional Welsh will raise your awareness and understanding of the Welsh language in the workplace.

On this degree you will learn about grammatical aspects of the Welsh language and its use in the context of various professional environments, from the Senedd to the office. As well as increasing your proficiency in the language you can familiarise yourself with aspects of Welsh literature, from the Middle Ages through to early modern and contemporary. A key advantage to our Professional Welsh degree is the breadth, choice, and flexibility within the curriculum.

Welsh is spoken in north-west Wales more than anywhere else in the world, providing unrivalled opportunities to improve your proficiency in the professional use of Welsh. At Bangor University, we offer Welsh-speaking work placements and the chance to interact with the many Welsh-speaking professionals and communities we collaborate with. Many of our students join Bangor University’s Welsh Students' Union and choose to live in our Welsh-speaking halls of residence, Neuadd JMJ.

Welsh and Celtic Studies is one of the oldest taught subject areas at Bangor University. Since its establishment in 1889, its contribution to the literary and cultural life of Wales has been crucial. You will be taught by some of the most prominent writers and poets in contemporary Wales. Garnering international acclaim, they have won awards including Book of the Year, and the highest prizes – Prose Medals, Drama Medals, Chairs and Crowns at the Urdd Eisteddfod and National Eisteddfod.
