Program Overview

The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours is the basis for a professional career in engineering, and at Waikato you're provided with plenty of opportunities to apply what you’ve learnt in real-life work situations.

Why study a BE(Hons)?

The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) focuses on how complex engineering problems that matter to society can be solved using engineering design principles and methods. At every stage of your degree, you'll be involved in conceptualising, designing and creating sophisticated engineering products, structures or processes.

Major : Materials and Manufacturing Engineering

By enrolling in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering you'll gain expertise in transforming raw materials into various products, such as foods, ceramics, alloys, and pharmaceuticals, while prioritising waste reduction and sustainability practices.

Why study Materials and Manufacturing Engineering?

At the University of Waikato you will have the opportunity to explore the key, over-lapping disciplines of materials engineering and manufacturing engineering.

Materials and manufacturing engineers pioneer revolutionary industrial solutions by creating, optimising, and developing new high performance, net-shaped products with enhanced functionalities (e.g. sustainability). They are trained in the interdisciplinary field that explores the relationship between structure, processing, and properties of materials, which combines physics, chemistry, and engineering principles to solve real-world problems associated with new/recycled materials, enabling the advancement of all the other major engineering disciplines.

Students learn about the diverse types of materials such as metals and plastics used across various industries like aerospace, medicine, energy, construction, and electronics, in combination with both established and modern manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Materials and manufacturing engineers are highly skilled with problem-solving, design, and communication expertise relevant to a wide range of local industries for tackling the most pressing problems our society currently faces.
