Expand your understanding of world cultures and the diversity of human experience.

Our program devotes particular attention to the ways in which peoples from various times and places have expressed cultural values, practices, and ideas of a philosophical, religious, moral, political and aesthetic nature. Our courses foster a critical approach to reading and research that, in helping students learn to identify and question preconceived assumptions and values, allows them to engage with and appreciate the interrelationships between diverse value systems. In turn, students develop a critical understanding of the human and of human community.

Our graduates have pursued careers in teaching, law, journalism, creative writing, editing, publishing, digital media and much more.

Our core program offers a wide array of courses across a variety of humanities disciplines. Students can focus their degree by specializing in one of our four streams: Power, Diaspora, Race; Arts, Material and Popular Cultures; Digital, Technological, Natural Worlds; Texts, Contexts, Interpretations.

Students interested in courses in Stream One might want to combine their Humanities degree with the Black Studies Certificate.

Hands-on experiences

Engage with acclaimed authors by participating in our Canadian Writers in Person series.
Enrol in HUMA 3207/CLTR 3150 Doing Culture: Narratives in Cultural Production, a course that pairs students with art institutions across Toronto to conduct community-based research.
Take our Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom course, the winner of the 2019 Airbus Global Engineering Dean's Council Diversity Award.

International Automatic Entrance Scholarships

Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 When you apply to York University as an International Student for Fall 2026 admission, you’ll automatically be considered for an entrance scholarship on the basis of your final admission average. These scholarships recognize your academic achievements and range from $2,500 to $37,500.

*Students admitted to Computer Science, Computer Security and Engineering programs are ineligible for the York International Scholarship of Distinction. Admitted students to these programs with an average of 90%+ will receive the York International Merit Award.

Notes:

This scholarship program is applicable for the Fall/Winter 2026/27 academic year only. International Entrance Scholarships can be combined with faculty-based scholarships and awards, but not our Prestigious Scholarships.
All entrance scholarships are available to students who are enrolled as full-time at York University undergraduate programs and paying international tuition fees.
Entrance scholarships are applicable to High School Direct Entry and Transfer students with a final admission average 75% or higher.?.
Renewable and re-gainable awards are available to students who complete a minimum of 24 credits each academic year with a minimum 7.5 GPA (B+). Scholarships are automatically applied at the start of each year level. Re-gainable scholarships are reinstated the following academic year if you raise your GPA to the minimum requirement.

Depending on the student’s academic profile, they may be eligible for automatic entrance scholarships of up to $15,000, with a maximum of $10,000 for Engineering, Computer Science, and Computer Security.

Overview	The President's International Scholarship of Excellence will be awarded to international high school applicants who demonstrate academic excellence, commitment to volunteer work and extracurricular activities, and leadership skills. Recipients will represent a variety of regions around the world and will be referred to as 'President's International Scholars'.
