Students in the International Year One: Social Science program will complete three terms of studies at WesternIC and upon successful completion of the program will progress to their second year of studies towards a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in the Faculty of Social Science at Western University. 


Social Science at Western is known for blending critical inquiry with real-world learning as students explore complex global issues. Social Science Program Options

Economics  Psychology  Sociology 

Economics is a social science devoted to the study of scarcity, and how individuals, organizations, and governments make choices. Economics at Western allows students to interact with faculty involved in cutting-edge research like health and environmental economics. cutting-edge 

Western psychology offers opportunities to search for clues about why we behave the way we do in our biology, feelings, thought processes and social experience. Utilizing multiple research strategies, students will seek a scientific understanding of behaviour at varies levels ranging from micro (brain functioning, genes, hormones, drugs) to macro (peer groups, culture).  

Western Sociology is known for making real world impact with unique strengths in social inequality, population dynamics and quantitative methods. Sociology looks at a wide range of issues from environmentalism to religious traditions, gender and social class, with a focus on the development of many important skills such as qualitative and quantitative analysis and the presentation of ideas and data.

Progression Requirements 

To progress into the second year of the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in the Faculty of Social Science at Western University, with 10 one-term classes (5.0 courses) applied to your degree, you must successfully complete the International Year One: Social Science program and meet the following progression requirements:

  • A minimum overall cumulative average of 60%
  • Completion of 10 one-term classes (5.0 courses) in the WesternIC International Year One: Social Science program

Each program of study will have specific course requirements for progression to year two modules.  WesternIC Student Success Advisors will support your course planning to ensure you are meeting prerequisites to progress to your intended program of study.
