Program Overview

Foundation Studies Program (Standard)

Foundation Studies programs are a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study. The programs act as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.

Successful completion of a Foundation Studies Program allows students to progress to Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science at the University of Tasmania.

Leading to: Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science

Our Marine and Antarctic Science degree is the only one of its kind in Australia and is offered at one of the best places in the world for temperate marine studies. It gives you the skills and knowledge for a career in the exciting, growing and globally critical marine, fisheries, aquaculture, and Antarctic sectors.

If you enjoy the natural and physical sciences, you can combine your passion for science with a love of the outdoors and adventure. This could be by pursuing a career in research, or in a more applied way through the sustainable aquaculture industry. For those interested in politics and policy, the world needs experts who understand the complexities of our marine environments to help set marine and Antarctic governance, working with countries, governments and private business all over the world towards common, sustainable goals.

The survival of humanity is linked to the health of coasts and oceans. It’s no understatement to say that those who study and work in this sector are directly contributing to the future of humanity, and the survival of our natural world.

Major: Oceans, Ice and Climate

Oceans, Ice and Climate explores Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. In this major, you will become a specialist in ocean dynamics, Earth's changing climate, sea level rise and the carbon cycle.

Your education and training is provided by experienced Antarctic researchers and you will gain insight to the inner workings of the CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division, as well as IMAS.

You will delve into the most pressing environmental issues humanity is facing today, including the vital role of the Southern Ocean which stores more heat and carbon than any other ocean, the disturbing decline of Antarctic sea ice, and the impact of melting glaciers and circulation shifts in the global ocean. Collaborating with IMAS researchers could include experiences like joining a research voyage aboard the RV Investigator, where you'll gain first-hand experience and invaluable insight into the world's oceans.
