Program Overview

Foundation Studies Program (Standard)

Foundation Studies programs are a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study. The programs act as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.

Successful completion of a Foundation Studies Program allows students to progress to Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania.

Leading to: Bachelor of Fine Arts

Having a creative mind allows us to see the world differently. Our students are imaginative and curious, they spend their time exploring topics that fascinate them. They want to follow an idea to its iterative conclusion, speculating on new outcomes and refining their practice along the way.
Whether you are interested in a specific practice or aspire to a multidisciplinary artistic career, the Bachelor of Fine Arts will prepare you with important skills for a fulfilling future of creativity and innovation.

You’ll gain technical abilities across our range of studio practice options, including drawing and printmaking, object and furniture, painting, photography, sculpture, and time-based media.

Studying Critical Practices and studio-based making will contextualise your practice in the wider art landscape, connecting you to discourses that have shaped artists for over a millennium. As your degree unfolds, you’ll work with our creative community across different artistic disciplines allowing you to dream big, experiment and create.

Major: Theatre and Performance

In the Theatre and Performance major you will develop skills through practice-led learning, to become creative, critical and resilient practitioners. At the same time you will explore the history and theory of theatre and performance, delving into the history of theatre, and the future of performance practice, enriching your capacity to create innovative work that responds to the twenty-first century world.

Through critical and reflective engagement you will learn how to manage creative projects, lead collaborative processes and develop communication and problem-solving skills. You will develop practical and technical skills for performance within wider artistic, social, political and environmental contexts while exploring the best of contemporary theatre practice. Through our Creative Curriculum units, you will have the opportunity to extend your skills through work-integrated learning placements in acclaimed Tasmanian festivals like Dark MOFO, Mona Foma, Ten Days on the Island, The Unconformity or Junction Arts Festival.

You will be studying at the Annexe in Launceston or at the Hunter Street Campus in Hobart, which have dedicated working theatres and studios. Through the unique blend of practice-based and theoretical offerings in this major, you will learn how to pursue a sustainable practice, and gain highly transferable skills which are valuable in a range of career pathways within the creative industries and beyond.
