Program Overview

Data scientist, as an occupation, has experienced a growth of 492 per cent from 2015 to 2019 (Burning Glass Technologies, National Skills Commission Analysis, 2020). It is widely acknowledged as one of the most desirable careers, not just in Australia, but globally.

Across the world, we are collecting massive amounts of data. It’s the new currency. But that data means very little if we’re not able derive meaningful insights from it. We need skilled data scientists to create meaning with the data.

A significant and accelerating challenge for modern business is managing fast incoming, voluminous and varied data that is increasingly being relied on to make decisions in today's business environment. QUT’s new Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Data Science will equip you to become a leader in data science, of particular relevance to your chosen field of business.  You'll be confident and capable to translate information into advice to be applied in the real world.

Our Business degrees are designed to inspire students to realise their full potential, to think entrepreneurially, and to ethically and sustainably shape the future of twenty-first century business. Any one of the majors from the Bachelor of Business will be ideal to accompany your studies in data science.

Major: Economics

Have you ever wondered how and why the RBA influences interest rates? Or how we transition to a lower carbon economy? Or how do we regulate complex markets like petrol and retail electricity to provide better outcomes for consumers? Or what steps can we take to actively bridge the gender pay gap and create equal opportunities for men and women? If these questions interest you, studying economics could be a great choice.

Economics is a unique way of thinking and analysing how the world works. Economics provides insights into national and global economy and offers ways to tackle the real-world challenges shaping our society. As an economist, your work will revolve around real-world issues to inform corporate strategy and government policy.

In this course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of economics, covering both microeconomics and macroeconomics applied to contemporary issues. You will learn about the interplay between the decisions and actions of consumers, firms and governments, economic growth, business cycles, unemployment, inflation, and international trade. You will build skills in data and statistics to support your economic analysis.

Real-world learning is embedded in this course, and throughout your degree, you'll have the chance to engage in practical learning opportunities that allow you to apply the theories you've learned in class to real-world situations. These opportunities include working as consultants with leading industry organisations, gaining professional work experience through our work integrated learning unit, and participating in immersive, international field projects.
